April 1st, 2014 – With pride for our first year and big plans for the future, today we celebrate the one year anniversary of Second Nature, an online journal for critical thinking about technology and new media in light of the Christian tradition.
To mark the occasion, Second Nature published two articles this week: “Passion and Precision: The Faith of Marshall McLuhan” by Derrick de Kerckhove and “Did McLuhan’s Deeply Held Roman Catholic Convictions Bias His Scholarship?” by Robert K. Logan. Both Kerckhove and Logan worked with Marshall McLuhan and offer different perspectives on the influence his religious faith had on his study of media.
In the last year, Second Nature published 36 features, including articles, book reviews, poems, and art. Second Nature also welcomed two new Editorial Board members, Brian Brock and John Dyer (for our full Editorial Board and their bios, see our About page), maintained an active blog, and added an online store with books from our Editorial Board and contributors.
In response to continued growth in quality submissions, Second Nature will double its publishing volume from a feature article every two weeks to one every week.
In addition to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, our RSS feed, and our email newsletter (see sidebar), you can now follow Second Nature on LinkedIn and Feedly.
We are also pleased to announce the establishment of the International Institute for the Study of Technology and Christianity (IISTC), a non-profit organization for the promotion of the study of technology in light of the Christian tradition. The IISTC will be used to raise money to support Second Nature as well as other related endeavors such as print and ebook editions, conferences, and seminars. Second Nature Editors Brantly Millegan and Benjamin Robertson are serving as the IISTC’s first Directors. The IISTC may be followed on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
